Finding the Perfect Red Lipstick

How do you find the perfect red lipstick? Try them all! Red lipsticks have blue-based and orange-based undertones. You never know which one is going to look best on you until you try. Slip on the lipstick and if you see your face come to life, you’ve got a match. If it drains your color and makes you look old say, “No thanks. I’ll pass.”  Look for newer formulas of red that aren’t too matte and have just the right amount of sheen. The heavier the pigment, the more intense the color. If you want to start slowly, go for a translucent red. You can test the lipstick on the back of your hand to see how sheer it really is. If you can still see your skin, it’s sheer. If it looks flat, you’ve got more pigment. When in doubt, ask one of the makeup artist working at the counter. Use a toothbrush and a little baking powder to exfoliate your lips of any dry or chapped skin. Coat with a light lip balm to moisturize lips. Blot excess lip balm before applying red lipstick. Keep it simple. Fresh looking skin, eye’s light and effortless. A few swipes of mascara and a quick hit of eyeliner smudged and tucked into top lash-line works great.
